Healthy Housing - Collett Manor In Kelowna B.C To Be Canada’s First WELL Certified Building

The Ojo Norte Straw Bale House project, a single-story home in North Bay, Ontario, stands as a compelling example of the benefits of straw-bale construction and its potential as a vernacular, sustainable housing solution.

Brought to life in September 2017 by the Future Living Lab, the project reflects a commitment to designing affordable, low-impact, and high-performance living environments. The home’s layout and construction approach were intentionally designed to optimize cost efficiency, material use, and long-term energy performance, demonstrating how thoughtful design can align sustainability with accessibility.

Straw bales, produced from agricultural waste, are locally available in North Bay, significantly reducing embodied carbon associated with transportation while giving new value to an otherwise discarded material. When used as wall infill or panels, straw bales offer exceptional thermal insulation, high thermal mass when combined with natural plasters, and strong acoustic performance. The construction process is also relatively simple and participatory, enabling hands-on involvement. In this project, the owners and the Future Living Lab team actively contributed to raising the walls, reinforcing knowledge sharing and community engagement.

Beyond performance, straw-bale construction offers notable environmental and health benefits. The material is renewable, biodegradable, and carbon-sequestering, while the thick, breathable walls help regulate indoor temperature and humidity, contributing to healthier indoor environments. Aesthetically, the construction allows for deeper window reveals and richly textured walls, creating warm, human-scaled spaces that connect contemporary living with vernacular building traditions.

Altogether, the Ojo Norte project demonstrates how straw-bale construction can deliver affordable, energy-efficient, low-carbon housing without compromising comfort or design quality, positioning it as a viable and regenerative alternative for future residential construction.
