Earthship Landing In Lake Erie Ontario

Most of us can only dream of a life without bills, but for Craig and Connie Cook, creators of Wind Chasers, that dream has become reality in the form of an Earthship, the place they proudly call home.

Located near Lake Erie, Ontario, their home was built using 1,200 recycled tires, which they acquired and had delivered at no cost.

Pioneered by Mike Reynolds, Earthships are a type of passive solar home constructed from a combination of natural and upcycled materials, including earth-packed tires, bottles, and cans. This makes them an ideal sustainable housing option for today’s throwaway culture.

What is particularly fascinating about Earthships is that they operate entirely with the sun and the earth, providing all the necessities needed for daily living.

Connie and Craig’s Earthship is a testament to sustainable, affordable, and self-reliant living. The couple now enjoys life with minimal external costs or bills. The only real challenge is staying in tune with the environment around them, a task that might be daunting for some.

Rather than relying on hydroelectric power, the couple uses stored thermal and solar energy for heating and cooling. Electricity comes from a combination of on-site solar panels and wind turbines that they built themselves. They collect and filter their own rainwater and even bypass the need for a traditional septic system by using a composting toilet.

Thanks to the home’s thermal mass and passive solar design, the interior maintains a stable and comfortable temperature of 20–22°C year-round without any furnace or external energy. Windows are strategically placed to capture the winter sun for warmth while allowing just enough summer sunlight to sustain an indoor planter.

That indoor planter is flourishing. Craig and Connie grow a variety of their own food, from sweet potatoes and carrots to tomatoes and bananas. Living sustainably, they have created a space that is both environmentally responsible and remarkably cost-effective.

Who knew that saving the planet could be this enjoyable and affordable? Craig and Connie’s Earthship shows that it is possible to live in harmony with the environment and your wallet while enjoying the comforts of home.
